What is Servo ?  

Servo comes from Latin words and its meaning is servant , which means servant acts accordingly his masters instructions and works faithfully and quickly . Servo is used where very precise movement is required with torque and rapidly . There is two parts . One is amplifier or its called  Servo drive and second one Servo Motor . Servo Motor is always with encoder so it  gives continuously feedback from the motor to Servo Amplifier . This amplifier continuously compare the given reference and feedback , depends on the deviation it gives command to motor for movement .

What Can Servo do ? 

Torque control – Torque generated by a motor can be controlled by controlling a current of the motor.
Speed control – Speed can be continuously changed in response to a speed reference voltage.
Rotation speed of a motor can be controlled by a speed reference input!
Position control – Rotation angle (position) and rotation speed (travel speed) of a motor can be controlled by a position reference.
Rotation angle (position) and rotation speed of a motor are decided by a position reference.
When a motor stops, an electrical brake (servo clamp) is applied in order to try to save the position of the motor.
